Instrument and Electrical Designer Lead Job Description
Objective/Job Purpose:
The Instrument and Electrical Designer Lead is responsible for production and quality control and management of the activities within the I&E Design Department and reports directly to the Director of Design Operations. The Instrument and Electrical Designer Lead is responsible for ensuring that I&E Design department meets or exceeds the quality, schedule, and budget goals for each project.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Production Management
• Assist department and company management in identifying and scheduling resources for specific activities and projects
• Oversee and maintain the production quality of subordinates
• Effectively apply company’s procedures and company standards
• Ensure all I&E deliverables are checks, QA\QC is complete and outstanding problems are resolved prior to submittal
• Coordinate other duties and business unit strategic objectives assigned by the Director of Design Operations
Communication
• Proactively participate in team and client meetings
• Keep I&E team (Designer and Drafters) well informed of changes to the project scope
• Communicate relevant project information to superiors
• Timely resolve and/or escalate issues
• Tactfully communicate difficult/sensitive information
• Participate in post shipment performance reviews (Lessons Learned) and work with management to set and implement continual production improvement goals
Technical Capabilities
• Possess and develop through continuing education and training a thorough understanding in the areas of I&E Design including:
• Knowledge of NEC with specific emphasis on Hazardous Area design
• Ability to produce or direct the production of:
o Area Classification Drawings
o Electrical One-Line Schematics
o Conduit and Cable Schedules
o Equipment Grounding Plans
o Power Capacity Studies
• Ability to direct and check design / drafting department for the production of:
o Conduit and Cable Tray Plans and Details
o Instrument and Electrical Wiring Schematics
o Lighting Plans and Details
• Knowledge of UL Industrial Control Panel fabrication standards for non-hazardous (UL 508A) and hazardous locations (UL 1203, 698A)
• Independently conduct field audits and investigations of customer facilities and manufacturing plants • Develop a thorough understanding of company’s capabilities
• Maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies and the potential application on client engagements

• Suggest areas for improvement in internal processes along with possible solutions
• Lead internal teams/task forces
Employee Development
• Work with management to ensure I&E Design staff members are qualified and trained to perform assign tasks
• Work with management to contribute in performance evaluations and mentoring of subordinates
• Encourage more junior employees to take responsibility for their development within the company
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
• 10+ years of experience as a Senior Instrument and Electrical Designer or similar position in the Manufacturing, Oil, or Gas industries.
• A minimum of an Associates’ Degree in a field related to Engineering and Design or equivalent technical experience
• Working knowledge of NEC with specific emphasis on Hazardous Area design
• Proficient with SKM Power Tools
• Proficient with MS Office
• Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
Travel
• Occasional travel to client offices and construction sites will be required
• I&E Designer’s may travel from 10-20% of the year. Scope and duration of travel varies depending on the phase and needs of any given project (e.g. sales, front end design, installation, commissioning, and start-up).
